Bluebird Flies again - At Record Speeds. 21st May 1998

Bluebird and the press The Bluebird Team is proud to announce that it has emphatically broken the British Land Speed Record for electric vehicles.

Subject to ratification, the new mark of 116.41 mph over the flying kilometre betters the record set by the British VOLTA team by over 10 mph.

The car, driven by team leader Don Wales, now takes its place in the record books alongside the legendary Bluebirds of Don's grandfather, Sir Malcolm, and his uncle Donald, Campbell.

"It's bloody marvellous" said Don, "We've been waiting for this for a long time. We've still got a long way to go to beat the International record, but its a positive start! Its just so great to finally get a Bluebird back in the record books".

Following the final run at 6.30pm Project Manager Martin Rees had this to say, "There have been times when this project looked dead on its feet and I cannot emphasis enough the effort Don and his wife Francesca have gone too to see this project continue and flourish. The national UK record is a great start, now we have to raise more funds to challenge the Americans for the big prize".

But Don, as ever, must have the final word. "The team performed brilliantly and I would like to thank them all from the bottom of my heart for a job well done - now there's the small matter of the International record for them to look forward too!"

The team are now to take the car to the Hawker Batteries electric vehicle extravaganza at Wroughton Airfield, Swindon, England on May 27th. Called 'Evolution: the Event' the day promises to be a great opportunity to show Bluebird off as the new holder of the national land speed record for electric vehicles!

We will post a fuller account of the Elvington record days proceedings as soon as we've all recovered from the party.
