Don Wales - grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell and nephew of Donald Campbell - has today revealed plans to take his revolutionary battery-powered Bluebird Electric to Pendine in an attempt to re-establish the famous family's connection with the LSR in its centenary year.
It is seventy years since Sir Malcolm Campbell became the last man to break the Land Speed Record on British soil - at Pendine.
Now Don Wales plans to better his grandfather's Pendine time of 174mph in an electric car, on his way to breaking the international LSR for electric vehicles of 215mph set last year by the American Lighting Rod team.
The attempt is scheduled for the weekend of September the 19/20th, just five months after Don successfully captured the British record, clocking an average of 116.4mph on the airstrip at the Yorkshire Air Museum, formerly RAF Elvington, in April.
"Like my grandfather and his team", Don says, "we are pushing the technology of the day to its limits, so anything could happen. But like him we are both confident and determined to succeed, provided the weather and the beach are with us. The condition of the sand at Pendine will be especially crucial, and it can change from day to day."
Press Release Ends.
Volunteers are needed to assist in all areas of preparation for this event. If you have any specialities and are willing to assist, please note them in your submission.
Please note: Due to safety reasons no children under the age of 16 will be allowed to attend any restricted areas during landspeed record attempts.
