The skills which led Evans, 39, to win three rounds of this year's British Rally Championship in a SEAT Ibiza, will be in action on the seven-mile stretch of beach overlooking Carmarthen Bay, as Bluebird Electric pilot, Don Wales, receives high-speed driving advice from rallying's 'Welsh Wizard', aboard a specially prepared 134mph SEAT Cordoba SX equipped with a safety cage.
Sir Malcolm Campbell began his land speed record-breaking career on Pendine Sands in 1924, achieving 146mph. Seventy-four years later his 37-year old grandson Don returns to Pendine aiming to better the current 215mph world record for electric-powered cars. Gwyndaf's advice on high-speed driving could prove vital.
"I've always admired the dedication and skill involved in undertaking a world land speed record attempt, and I'm delighted to be playing a small part in this one," said Gwyndaf. "You have to be brave, and driving so fast on sand isn't easy. If the surface is uneven and the car begins to move around, a little bit of rally driving knowledge could prove invaluable.
"Driving position will be critical," added Gwyndaf. "If you want to have lightning fast reactions I find it better to sit closer to the steering wheel. If the Bluebird Electric car starts to move off-line, Don will have to anticipate what may happen and correct any slide before it becomes a problem. It will be interesting to see him prepare for this world record attempt."
"We are grateful to DERA Pendine for allowing us to run on the sands mid-week and to Gwyndaf for lending us his advice," said Don. "Together it will give us valuable experience prior to our attempt at the record this weekend."
Note to Editors: Gwyndaf Evans and Don Wales will be available for media interviews and pictures between 12pm and 3pm on Thursday 17 September on Pendine Sands.
